The alfresco room

Ever wandered through display homes and marvelled at how the alfresco room seems to compliment both the outside and the inside of the home? It’s a unique room that sits on the boundary of where the interior of the home ends and where the exterior begins.

Ever wandered through display homes and marvelled at how the alfresco room seems to compliment both the outside and the inside of the home? It’s a unique room that sits on the boundary of where the interior of the home ends and where the exterior begins.
The alfresco room is no longer a trend but almost a given in modern house design. It lends itself beautifully to our climate and provides so many benefits and entertaining options for today’s households.

It often means you can entertain larger numbers of people as internal living areas spill out to this space. Practically it’s certainly easier to clean than carpeted dining rooms and has been a welcomed solution for entertaining young people.

Kathleen Bowen, the Founder and Director of The Inside Story Design Concepts and an award winning interior designer believes a good alfresco space should achieve a sense of light and spaciousness and offer a relaxed and uplifting environment for family and friends.

It should encompass balance, proportion and scale and whilst it might have some trendy and fashionable features it should essentially have long term and timeless appeal as it will be a much used and hopefully much loved area. She believes that an alfresco room like all well designed living rooms should be conducive to family interaction which in turn creates a sense of ease and comfort.

Kathleen offers some valuable advice on achieving the ideal alfresco space:

  • Have an inferred ceiling with slats/batons rather than a solid ceiling so that you don’t lose the quality of space. This allows for dappled light throughout the day -which is both a functional and aesthetic quality
  • Using outdoor weather proof rugs creates the sense of an indoor living space. Define the outside lounge and dining area to give it inside appeal – using candelabra to add more drama for night time use.
  • Blur the boundaries: Bring green and garden elements inside and take outside items like cushions, accents, colours etc
  • Use floor finishes that extend from inside to outside. Select tiles with slip resistance qualities, so that they are suitable for both.
  • Additional features to think about: lighting, outdoor heater, fans, appliances (if your alfresco room has kitchen facilities)
  • Ways to add colour and ambience: plants, throws, pillows, seat covers, table ware, candles, floral arrangements, music etc.

There is no reason why this versatile room cannot be used all year round. Whether you are having a large gathering or want to enjoy a cool summer night breeze, the alfresco room is the ideal setting for all sorts of occasions.

Kathleen Bowen styles residential interiors exclusively for Eden Brae display homes. In fact ANYTHING you see as part of the décor for Eden Brae Homes can be sourced for your very own home.
