Looking after the little things

Award winning Green printer, Focus Press, is leading the industry in operating as a completely carbon neutral printer.

Focus Press is committed to managing its operations in an environmentally responsible way. A documented Environmental Management System, that complies to AS/NZS ISO 14001:2004 Environmental management systems, is the means by which Focus Press ensures that environmentally responsible behaviour is embraced as an integral part of its operations.

Focus PressFocus Press has become one of the first printers in the world to become carbon neutral. It has achieved this by measuring and reducing its energy use, working with suppliers to minimise transport and waste, and buying carbon offsets for the carbon emissions it simply cannot avoid. Focus Press is now recognised as a world leader in carbon neutral printing.

In 2009, Focus Press received an Achievement Award at the NSW Department of Environment’s Green Globe Awards acknowledging its environmental efforts. Currently, it also holds a Silver in the Sustainability Awards Program and is expecting to be the first printer to achieve Gold in 2011.

To achieve its green status Focus Press has targeted five key areas ~ carbon, waste, water, materials and accreditation. One example is Focus Press’s policy to recommend and supply paper that is sourced from responsibly managed forests that are either FSC¹ or PEFC² certified.

In 1999, Focus Press also pioneered the use of vegetable-based inks in Australia including the reduction of all Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Focus Press switched to citrus-based solvents to counter concerns about the impact of toxic, oil-based inks and chemicals on the workforce and the environment. Ten years later vegetable-based inks have become an industry standard.

¹ The Forest Stewdardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. ² Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is the world’s largest forest certification system.
