How green is your roof?

Your roof offers you many opportunities to improve the energy efficiency of your home. In particular, roof tiles can assist in keeping your home cool in summer and a new innovation means they can also harness the sun’s rays to power your home.

In a climate like Australia’s, the thermal performance of a roof is measured by how much heat it gains. An important factor in heat gain is colour - the lighter the colour of your roof, the more solar radiation it reflects and the less heat it absorbs. However, materials of similar colour and heat reflectance can perform differently in the way they transfer heat into your home.

Tests conducted this year by the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle have shown that roof tiles of similar solar reflectance to the most commonly used alternative material, transfer less heat into a home’s living space. The benefit to you is that a tile roof can reduce the amount of energy required to cool your home.

Roof For more than 60 years, Monier has been Australia’s iconic roof tile brand. To increase thermal control in your home, Monier recommends the installation of Safety Sarking as a secondary barrier to the elements. Safety Sarking is a pliable yet extremely strong foil and polymer roof wrap that is laid under your tiles.

Apart from providing thermal insulation, Safety Sarking also helps to prevent dampness in walls and ceilings by controlling condensation and minimises the amount of dust entering the home. Other benefits include protection against burning embers during a bushfire and damage to the ceiling space from hail.

Smart new solarTILE

Monier’s latest release is a commonsense innovation that teams solar power technology with roof tile design to provide a renewable energy option for new homes that will not spoil the look of the roof.

The smart new solarTILE uses up-to-date PV technology to convert sunlight into electricity. Working in much the same way as a conventional ‘bolt-on’ Photo Voltaic panel, solarTILE features an impressive integrated design that allows the tiles to blend with the roof.

Developed specifically to work seamlessly with Monier’s range of flat profiled concrete tiles, Monier’s solarTILE is a truly innovative product that delivers a ‘green energy solution’ with good design and aesthetic appeal at its core. Pilot projects have been completed in Western Australia, on the NSW south coast and NSW northern beaches. In all cases, the builders were looking for an energy efficient solution whilst maintaining the homes design integrity.

Monier’s solarTILE is an attractive alternative to traditional solar power options and responds cleverly to the growing demand for renewable energy sources. The tiles utilise the energy from the sun to power your home, reducing your power bill, but do not reduce your home’s exterior aesthetic.
