Alfresco – stepping up in style

More and more Australians are adopting a lifestyle centred on alfresco areas as a standard feature of new homes and renovations.

The popularity and style of alfresco living has continued to evolve over the last decade and we are now seeing resort style outdoor rooms that are as equally important to the homeowner as the indoor areas. Ideally an alfresco theme is designed to seamlessly integrate the outdoor and indoor areas of a home.

Making the most of your home and land comes down to good design. Our climate is ideally suited to spend time entertaining and living outside. Patios, decking and the connection between kitchen, open plan living and alfresco areas provide the perfect entertaining environment for anytime of year if the alfresco has been well designed with the elements in mind.

Important factors to keep in mind include protection from direct sun and glare, shelter from the wind, adequate space for chairs and a table, and a preparation and serving area for food and drinks.

alfresco Contemporary alfresco design can range from a simple all–weather patio that leads directly from the living area, to an elaborate structure that might incorporate some standard indoor features such as a barbecue cook top, sink and refrigerator. Alfresco structures can be a continuation of the main roofline or a free standing structure.

A new trend in alfresco design is using timber lining for alfresco ceilings. Australian company Glosswood, has released an innovative timber lining product that offers many benefits over traditional timbers.

According to Glosswood director, Pamela Thomson, achieving a sophisticated designer look through the use of timber has never been easier, more affordable or more eco-friendly than with Glosswood’s new range of pre-finished lining boards.

“These natural coloured, beautifully grained boards can be installed as feature ceilings in outdoor structures or used inside the home,” said Pamela. “They are a great choice when you want to create an easy indoor-outdoor flow that blurs the lines between internal living areas and outdoor entertaining spaces.”

Glosswood’s new range of pre-finished lining boards and mouldings are lightweight and made from Paulownia – a fast-growing plantation hardwood with a beautiful straight grain that’s light, strong, dimensionally stable, and unattractive to termites.

Glosswood uses an innovative ultra violet finishing process that colours and coats the boards on all four sides to give a consistent finish and a superior, highly-durable professional appearance. No sanding or painting is required – once installed, the job is finished. This translates to less mess, less trades and significant savings in terms of time and money.

Glosswood can be fixed onto timber framing or direct to steel. The linings are tongue and grooved, and available in two width sizes and a choice of colours – Western Red Cedar, Jarrah, Tasmanian Oak, Beech or White with matching trims.

“Glosswood is ideal for undercover external applications such as alfresco, porticos and feature walls or ceilings,” said Pamela. “Pre-finished lining boards provide the warmth and beauty of natural timber and add a truly resort style to your alfresco area.”

Highly regarded by the building industry for its innovative approach, Glosswood is a previous winner of the Western Australian Housing Industry Association (HIA) Product Innovation Award and a finalist for industry innovation at the 2007 HIA National Housing Awards.
