If only the walls could talk

In the midst of the excitement of dressing up the interior of your home with gorgeous paint colours, you may not always consider the contribution innovative paint products can make to the health of your home.

Advancements in paint technology now allow you to choose clever new products with low odour, low VOC and antibacterial protection to help you create a cleaner, safer and healthier indoor environment for your family.

VOCs are ‘volatile organic compounds’, such as the solvents used in paints, adhesives and inks, which evaporate into the air and contribute to the formation of smog (ozone).

Taubmans, Australia’s market leader in paint technology and colour innovation, has developed a range of green paint product solutions to meet environmental standards using low VOC coatings.

Taubmans Pure Performance water-based trade products meet the Green Star VOC requirements of the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA)* and contain less than 5g/L VOC. Taubmans Easycoat interior premium acrylic range also offers low VOC.

Both of these product ranges have the added benefit of Microban antibacterial protection. Microban technology is incorporated into the paint at the manufacturing stage. It does not wash or wear off, lasts the life of the paint and forms a long lasting physical barrier against bacteria.

ladder Microban inhibits the growth of bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella and Golden Staph as well as mould, mildew and fungus on painted surfaces.

Microban inhibits the growth of bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella and Golden Staph as well as mould, mildew and fungus on painted surfaces such as walls and ceilings in bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms. It is also suited to damp, high humidity areas of the home.

When microbes such as bacteria come in to contact with a paint surface, Microban protection acts to deplete the cells of important metal ions and disrupts their ability to generate energy, which slows their growth and ultimately causes the microbes to die.

According to PPG Architectural Coatings, the manufacturers of Taubmans, its Pure Performance and Easycoat paints with low VOC and Microban help to improve the indoor environment of your home.

Taubmans’ products containing Microban are accepted products in the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice Program. Products associated with the program may help people with asthma and allergies.

According to the National Asthma Council, 40 per cent of Australians suffer from allergies and exposure to mould may trigger asthma. Unfortunately, normal cleaning practices may not usually include regular cleaning and washing of walls so bacteria, mould, mildew and fungus may accumulate.

Research published in the International Journal of Environmental Heath Research (2002) by Ojima, M et al indicates that many walls in the home are covered in unhealthy, disease causing bacteria.

Facts about mould and asthma

  • Moulds are microscopic fungi that live on plant and animal matter. Moulds can be found almost anywhere; they grow on virtually any substance where moisture is present.

  • According to the National Asthma Council Australia, exposure to mould may trigger asthma symptoms, hay fever or other allergies.

  • Australia has the second highest prevalence of asthma in the world with 2.2 million Australians suffering from asthma.

  • Mould may trigger asthma symptoms like cough, wheeze and shortness of breath, or allergy symptoms like a runny nose.

* Taubmans is a member of the GBCA, a national, not-for-profit organisation that is committed to developing a sustainable property industry for Australia by encouraging the adoption of green building practices. It is uniquely supported by both industry and governments across the country.
